Why Is My Email System Not Allowing Me To Send Emails? My Outgoing Emails Are Being Blocked!

When Your Outgoing Emails Are Being Blocked

Spam filters block messages because the server has been putting out a lot of spam. Blocks normally will last an hour and then the IP is put into the grey list to see if it is still trying to send large amounts of spam. If it is still sending a lot of spam it will be put back into the blocked (black) list. If it is not putting out a lot of spam then it is left in the grey list for a while to see if it tries to start sending a lot of spam again.

The "poor" reputation may have been caused by one of the following:

  • Your PC may be infected with a virus or botnet software program.
  • Someone in your organization may have a PC infected with a virus or botnet program.
  • Someone on the same server as you may be sending spam although they are not using your URL.
  • You may be utilizing a dynamic IP address which was previously utilized by a known spammer.
  • Your marketing department may be sending out bulk emails that do not comply with the CAN-SPAM Act.
  • You may have an insecure wireless network which is allowing unknown users to use your network to send spam.
  • In some rare cases, your recipient's Spam Firewall may be misconfigured.

The spam program  is not attempting to block your individual email. A single email server can host thousands of sites and it only takes ONE bad apple to get the server (and everyone using that server) black listed. The reputation system uses automated algorithms for determining its results - very similar to the anti-fraud mechanisms used for credit cards.
